The Environmental Protection Agency is a considering stricter rule for disposing of coal as waste. Waste that is currently contaminating soil and drinking water. They are hearing public comments on the proposed new rules until Friday, November 19, 2010! The Environmental Defense Fund is urging you to quick add your voice to those in support of this more stringent rule:
"Coal ash is one of the most dangerous environmental threats you may never have heard of. The leftover waste of coal-fired power plants contains some really nasty and toxic materials – arsenic, lead, mercury, and more. Exposure can lead to increased risk of cancer, learning disabilities, birth defects, and other serious illnesses.
If you live near a coal-fired power plant, your drinking water may already be contaminated. That's because right now coal ash is less strictly controlled than household garbage."
